Chapter Eighteen

Wynona stared at the book in her lap. Her hands trembled slightly, and she worked to keep them steady. She knew Chief Ligurio and Arune were right. Mama Reyna had known more about what was coming than anyone, and it was all because Granny Saffron had shared what was in her grimoire.

“Wynona,” Celia said in a curt tone. “You don’t have to do this.”

As soon as the book had come out, Celia had jumped to her feet, her hands clenched in fists and her eyes darting around the house as if expecting their mother to attack at any moment.

Wynona wished she could reassure her sister, but the truth was, their mother could attack at any moment. The house wards would give the group a warning, but if President Le Doux decided to come after them, there would be little to stop him.

“It’s alright,” Wynona finally said. “We need to know.” Ignoring the fear pulsing in her chest, Wynona opened the book and put her hand on the pages. “Prophecy,” she whispered, telling the book her intentions.

At first the book didn’t move, and Wynona had a flash of panic that she’d done something wrong. It worked the last time. After bonding with the grimoire, it had responded to her questions like a living entity and Wynona had assumed that bond was still active.

Frowning, she turned to question Arune just as the pages began to shift. Slow at first, then faster and faster until Wynona leaned back from the blast of air in her face. Moments later, the fluttering stopped, and Wynona blew out a breath.

“What does it say?” Rayn asked from the kitchen doorway. “Read it out loud.”

Wynona’s mouth opened and closed, but nothing came out. “It’s…” She finally croaked, only to break off, not knowing what to say.

“It’s what?” Rascal marched over and leaned over her shoulder. “It’s blank,” he announced, straightening. “Why is it blank?”

Blank, Violet finally joined the conversation. Stupid old witches…can’t trust them.

Wynona shook her head. “I don’t…I don’t understand.” She picked the book up and tilted it around. “Why did it open to a blank page?”

Arune suddenly stood in front of her. “May I?” He held out his hand.

Shrugging, Wynona handed him the book, but a flash of sparks made her squeal and Arune jumped back.

“Saffron, you idiot,” Arune grumbled as he rubbed his hand on his pants.

Wynona felt as if her eyes were going to bug out of her head as she looked down at the book back in her lap.

Celia cursed and came up behind Arune. “Is there some kind of spell on it?”

Arune shook his head. “No. It’s because she bonded with it.”

“You’ve touched it since then,” Wynona pointed out.

“Not after you asked it a question.”

Wynona threw her hands in the air. “But there’s nothing here! It didn’t open to a prophecy.”

“It can’t lie,” Arune said, stroking his chin. “Why don’t you use your vision?”

Wynona closed her eyes. “Why didn’t I think of that?”

Because you’ve got baby brain. Violet took a running leap from the coffee table to the couch.
